Fitness Or Healthπͺπ½ Flashcards
What is fitness?
Ability to do physical activity
What is good health?
Being free from disease such as those caused by bacteria and viruses
How can fitness levels be measured?
- stamina
- strength
- flexibility
- agility
- speed
- cardiovascular efficiency
What are the risk of getting a heart disease ?
- you smoke
- have high blood pressure
- eat too much saturated fat
- eat too much salt
What are the two measures of blood pressure?
- systolic pressure- maximum blood pressure the heart produces (1st number)
- diastolic pressure - the blood pressure between heart beats (2nd number)
E.i 120/80mmHg
What happens to your blood pressure during exercising ?
β’Your systolic pressure increase but then decrease after you have finished
What can increase blood pressure ?
- smoking
- eating too much salt
- being overweight
- stress
- drinking too much alcohol
- eating a lot of saturated fat
What can decrease blood pressure?
- regular exercise
* eating a balanced diet
What can high blood pressure cause?
140/90mmHg is an example of a high blood pressure
- heart attack
- stroke (if small blood vessels burst in the brain)
- kidney damage (if small blood vessels burst in the kidneys)
What does a tobacco smoke contain which is harmful?
β’ carbon monoxide
It combines with haemoglobin which decreases the carrying capacity of oxygen in the blood and prevents the red blood cells carrying as much oxygen. The heart will beat faster to compensate which strains the heart
β’ nicotine increases heart rate
What does high level of saturated fat causes?
- liver makes cholesterol from saturated fat.
- cholesterol is carried in the blood and deposited in the artery walls.
- arteries become narrow and blood flow is restricted:
- blood pressure increases to force the blood through the narrower gap
What can Cholesterol deposits may lead to?
- a blood clot ( thrombosis)
- a thrombosis in the coronary artery causes a heart attack
β’ a thrombosis in the artery supplying the brain causes a stroke
What can low blood pressure lead to?
- dizziness
- fainting
- poor circulation in areas such as fingers and toes
- organ failure
