Heat Transfer Vocabulary Flashcards
Law of Conservation of Energy
Energy cannot be created nor destroyed just transformed (under normal conditions)
Heat
Thermal energy that flows due to a difference in temperature. heat flows from hot to cold
Heat transfer
A method by which heat flows through (conduction, convection, radiation).
conduction
heat transfer within or between solid objects
convection
heat transfers into or out of fluids
Radiation
Heat transfer due to the packets of energy called photons that can travel through many substances, even empty space.
insulator
a material which through energy (electrical, thermal, sound) cannot be easily transformed
Conductor
A material which energy (electrical, thermal, or sound) can be easily transfered
temperature
The measure of the average speed of all particles
thermal energy
the total energy of all particles in an object
