Heat Transfer Flashcards
How do substances expand?
, gain energy, vibrate more vigorously more able to overcome forces of attraction holding them together
( reverse thing for contraction)
What is conduction?
Physical Interaction of particles (in brownian motion) - transfer of KE- transfer of heat
What is the relationship between the amount of particles and the kinetic energy(which corresponds to the amount of heat energy)?
The more particles there are, the more evenly spread out energy is among the items. ( and vice-versa)
What is the relationship between kinetic and heat energy?
The greater the amount of heat energy, the greater the amount of average kinetic energy
Law of heat transfer and thermal equilibrium.
when two objects are placed in contact energy is transferred from one to the other until they reach the same temperature (are in thermal equilibrium)
Why are metals good conductors of heat?
Metals are made up of closely bonded metallic cations in a sea of free-moving delocalised electrons which can move quickly, to allow a faster net energy transfer of heat energy to cooler parts of the metal.
What is convection?
Convection is a type of heat transfer method in which heat is transferred between fluids(liquids/gases), in a cycle known as a convection current.
How does color affect heat transfer?
Dark, dull - Higher rate of emission and absorbtion
Light, shiny - Lower Rate but better reflectors
ONLY AFFECTS THERMAL RADIATION
