Chemical Changes Flashcards
What is an acid?
An acid is a substance that upon dissolving in H2O, will dissociate to form H+ ions.
What is an alkali?
An alkali is a base that is soluble in water. Once it dissolves in water, its will dissociate to form H+ ions.
What is a base?
A base is a substance that is any metal oxide or hydroxide.
What is the pH scale?
A scale measuring alkalinity and acidity, with values from 0 to 14. Alkalis have the highest values while acids have the lowest.
What is an an indicator?
A chemical substance that changes colour in substances of different pH values.
What are the different types of acid reactions?
- Acid + base=salt and water(neutralisation)
- Acid + metal = salt + hydrogen
- Acid + carbonate = salt+water+co2
