12
Q

Why are metals good conductors of heat

A

Metals have free electrons which can move through the solid and transfer the heat energy along the metal from hot to cold area

15
Q

Describe what happens during convection

A

The particles in gas/liquid gain heat energy and move further apart
They become less dense and rise
The colder more dense particles then fall down to replace those that rose up

16
Q

How does heat radiation travel

A

Radiation does not need particles to travel
It travels through a vacuum
It is an electromagnetic wave

17
Q

What type of surface is a good emitter of heat radiation

A

Matt black surface

18
Q

What is a good absorber of radiation

A

Matt black surface

19
Q

How would you describe white surfaces in relation to heat radiation

A

White surfaces are good reflectors of heat radiation, poor absorbers and poor emitters of heat radiation

20
Q

What colour absorbs heat and emits heat

A

Black

21
Q

What colour reflects heat and is a poor emitter and absorber

A

White

22
Q

What is conduction

A

The atoms in a solid vibrate and as they gain energy, particles vibrate more and transfer heat along the solid from hot to cold area
