Heat Transfer Flashcards
1
Q
Types of heat transfers
A
Conduction, convection, radiation
2
Q
What is conduction
A
-Particles that are very close together can transfer heat energy as they vibrate
- The ions are packed closely together and they vibrate continually
- The hotter the metal, the more kinetic energy these vibrations have
- This kinetic energy is transferred from hot parts of the metal to cooler parts by the free electrons
3
Q
What is convection
A
- Warmer regions of a fluid are more dense than cooler regions of the same fluid
- The warmer regions will rise because they are more dense
- The cooler regions will sink as they are less dense
4
Q
What is radiation
A
- Heat can move by travelling as infrared waves.
- These are electromagnetic waves, like light waves, but with a longer wavelength.
- Infrared waves are heat objects that absorb them and are also known as thermal radiation.
