Contact and Non-contact Forces Flashcards
1
Q
Types of forces
A
Contact and non-contact forces
2
Q
Examples of contact forces
A
- Buoyancy
- The buoyant force is the upward force on an object fully or partly immersed in a fluid.
- Normal Forces
- the support force exerted upon an object that is in contact with another stable object (box on table)
- Friction
- the force exerted by a surface as an object moves across it or makes an effort to move across it
- Tension
- the force that is transmitted through a string, rope, cable or wire when it is pulled tight by forces acting from opposite ends
3
Q
Examples of non-contact forces
A
- Gravitation
- a force that attracts any two objects with mass
- Electrostatic force
- attraction or repulsion that arises between electrically charged particles because of their motion
- Magnetism
4
Q
What is air resistance
A
Frictional force that acts upon objects as they travel through the air
5
Q
Spring force
A
The force exerted by a compressed or stretched spring upon any object that is attached to it
6
Q
Applied force
A
Force that is applied to an object by a person or another object
7
Q
Difference between contact and non-contact
A
- Contact force occurs due to the contact between two different objects.
- Non-contact force occurs due to either attraction or repulsion between two objects such that there is no contact between these objects.
