Heat Radiation Flashcards
1
Q
How is heat radiated?
A
As infrared waves. These are electromagnetic waves that travel in straight lines a the speed of light
2
Q
Radiation is different from conduction and convection in several ways. Explain those ways
A
- It doesn’t need a medium to travel through so it can occur in a vacuum, like space. This is the only way that heat reaches us from the sun
- It can only occur through transparent substances, like air, glass and water
- The amount of radiation emitted or absorbed by an object depends to a large extent on its surface colour and texture
3
Q
Matt black surface are good what?
A
They’re good absorbers and emitters of radiation.
4
Q
Light coloured, smooth and shiny objects are what?
A
They’re very poor absorbers and emitters of radiation. The reflect heat radiation
5
Q
What is radiation?
A
It’s how we get heat from the sun
