Electromagnetic Spectrum Flashcards
Name the seven types of electromagnetic waves?
- Radio waves
- Microwaves
- Infrared
- Visible light
- Ultraviolet
- X- Ray’s
- Gamma rays
Which EM waves tend to to be able to pass through material?
EM waves at each end of the spectrum
Which EM waves are absorbed?
Those near the middle
Why are the EM waves with higher frequency more dangerous to living cells?
Because they have more energy
What is caused when any EM radiation is absorbed?
Heating and ionisation if the frequency is high enough
What is ionisation?
Where an atom or molecule either loses or gains electrons
What EM waves can be used for communication?
Radio waves and microwaves
What are some of the advantages of different types of signals?
- Signals travel really fast
- Electrical wires and optical fibres can carry loads of information very quickly
- Information sent through optical fibres and electrical wires is pretty secure
What are some of the disadvantages for using different types signals?
- Cables can be difficult to repair if they get broken
What is an advantage of wireless communication?
It’s portable
What can electromagnetic waves travel through?
A vacuum
