Conduction And Convection Flashcards
What is a metal?
A conductor
What is wood?
An insulator
What does a metal do?
It conducts the heat away
What is cold?
When there’s an absence if heat
What is conduction of heat?
It’s the process where vibrating particles pass on extra kinetic energy to neighbouring particles
Metals conduct heat really well because?
Some of their electrons are free to move inside the metal
How do liquids and gases conduct heat?
They conduct heat more slowly than solids. The particles aren’t held so tightly together which prevents them bumping into each other so often
Where does convection occur?
In liquids and gases
What happens when a liquid or gas is heated up?
The particles move faster and the fluid expands, becoming less dense
Explain convection?
Convection occurs when the more energetic particles move from the hotter region to the cooler region and take their heat energy with them
Why can’t convection happen in solids?
Because the particles can’t move
How can convection be reduced?
The fluid needs to be stop from moving. Clothes, blankets and cavity wall foam insulation all work by trapping pockets of air
Where does conduction occur?
It occurs mainly in solids
