Heat Flashcards
Temperature
A measure of how hot or cold a body is
Heat
Energy due to the movement of molecules within the body. Causes it to change temperature if added or removed. Flows from a higher temperature to a lower temperature
Thermometric property
A physical property of a substance that changes measurably with a change in temperature
Heat Capacity (C)
The amount of heat required to raise the temperature of a body by 1 K
Specific heat capacity (c)
The amount of heat required to raise the temperature of 1 kg of a substance by 1 K
Latent heat
The amount of heat required to change state of a body without a change in temperature
Specific latent heat of Fusion
The amount of heat necessary to change 1 kg of a substance from a solid into a liquid without a change in temperature
Specific latent heat of vaporization
The amount of heat required to change 1 kg of the substance from a liquid to a gas without a change in temperature
Conduction
The movement of heat true is substance by transferring kinetic energy between adjacent particles with the no overall movement of the substance
Convection
The transfer of heat true fluid by using circulating currents of fluid
Radiation
The transfer of heat by electromagnetic waves emitted by one body and absorbed by another
U-Value
The amount of heat per second passing through 1 m² of a substance when there is a temperature of 1K between its ends
Solar Constant/Irradiance
The average amount of the sun’s energy falling per second perpendicularly on one m² of the earth’s atmosphere. It is 1.35kW/m²
