Heart Vocab Flashcards
Atrial fibrillation
a heart arrhythmia when the normal beating in the upper chambers of the heart is irregular and blood doesn’t flow as well from the atria to the lower chambers of the heart
AV node
a small structure in the heart near the noronary sinus on the interatrial septum. It controls the passage of the heart’s electrical signal from the atria to the ventricles and coordinates the impulses
Bundle branches
A part of the electrical system of the heart which controls the hearbeat and is made up of several parts that tell the ventricular muscle when to contract
Bundle of his
An elongated segment connecting the AV node and the bundle branches of the septal crest and transmits electrical impulses from the node to the bundle branches
Purkinje fibers
A network of fibers that recieve conductive signals originating at the AV node and simultaneously activate the left and right ventricles by directly simulating the ventricular myocardium
Sinoatrial node
A small body of specialized muscle fibers, located in the right atroim whose activity is responsible for initiating the heart beat
Ventricular fibrillation
A type of arrhythmia that affects the heart’s ventricles. The lower heart chambers contract in a very rapid and uncoordinated manner which causes the heart to not pump blood to the rest of the body
Autonomic nervous system
The part of your nervous system which controls the automatic functions of your body that you need to survive and connects your brain to most of the internal organs
Ectopic focus
An excitable group of cells that causes a premature heartbeat outside the normally functioning SA node of the heart
