Heart Terms Flashcards
Pulmonary Circuit
(R side of heart receives O2 poor blood from tissues); pumps blood to lungs to get rid of CO2 and picks up O2 (oxygen loading)
Systemic Circuit
(L side of heart receives O2 rich blood from lungs); pumps blood to rest of body.
Right Atrium
Receives blood returning from systemic circuit.
Left Atrium
Receives blood from pulmonary circuit
Right Ventricle
Pumps blood to pulmonary circuit
Left Ventricle
Pumps blood to systemic circuit
Apex
tip of heart facing left hip
Pericardium
double-walled sac surrounds heart. Has two layers: fibrous pericardium (protect and anchor heart) & serous pericardium (touches heart)
Serous Pericardium
Includes two layers: Parietal layer (underneath fibrous pericardium) & Visceral layer (epicardium).
*between these two layers = pericardial cavity (reduces friction)
Epicardium
visceral layer of serous pericardium- underneath the fibrous pericardium
Myocardium
Circular bundles of contractile cardiac muscle cells.
MIDDLE layer
Endocardium
Innermost layer; lines heart chambers
Interventricular Septum
Separates R &L ventricles
Auricles
Increase volume in both atria
Papillary Muscles
Attach to chordae tendinae to prevent them from over flapping.
(rooted in inferior of ventricles)
