heart structure Flashcards
How many chambers is the heart split into?
four
What are two upper chambers of the heart called?
The right & left atrium
What are the two lower chambers of the heart called?
The right & left ventricles
What is the function of the left ventricle?
pump blood from the heart to the rest of body
What is the aorta?
the main artery of the body; leaves the heart from the left ventricle
What is the function of the pulmonary artery?
carry deoxygenated blood from the heart to the lungs
What is the vena cava?
one of the largest veins in the body
What is the function of the pulmonary vein?
carry oxygenated blood from the lungs to the left atrium of the heart
What is the function of the tricuspid valve?
Allows blood to flow from the right atrium to the right ventricle
What is the function of the bicuspid valve?
Allows blood to flow from the left atrium to the left ventricle
What is the function of the pulmonary valve?
stops blood going back from the pulmonary artery into the heart
Aortic valve?
found at the exit of the left ventricle where the aorta begins
