Blood composition Flashcards
What are erythrocytes?
Erythrocytes are red blood cells made in the bone marrow, that have a thin disc-like shape and are red because of haemoglobin
What are leucocytes?
Leucocytes are white blood cells that are part of the body’s immune system/cells that defend the body against infections
What are the different types of leucocytes?
lymphocytes, neutrophils and monocytes
Describe the three types of leucocytes
lymphocytes- there are two types, B-cells that develop in the bone marrow & T-cells that develop in the thymus gland.
Neutrophils-small & fast, they are one of the first to travel to the site of infection
monocytes- largest of the white blood cell
What are platelets?
Platelets are produced in the bone marrow and are fragments of larger cells
What is plasma?
Plasma is a clear yellow-coloured liquid that carries platelets, red and white blood cells and proteins
