Heart Qi Deficiency
“Palpitations”
a subjective feeling of the patient who is uncomfortably aware of the heart beating; it has nothing to do with the objective rate or rhythm of the heart
Palpitations Shortness of Breath on exertion tiredness spontaneous sweating a slight feeling of stuffiness or discomfort in the heart region feeling cold cold hands bright pale face slightly dark lips pale tongue, deep weak pulse
Heart Yang deficiency
palpitations SOB weak and shallow breathing profuse sweating cold limbs cyanosis of lips, greyish-white complexion in severe cases coma very pale or bluish tongue, hidden-minute-knotted pulse
Heart Yang collapse

HT qi deficiency palpitations occur more in daytime
HT blood deficiency occur more in the afternoon/evening
palpitations dizziness insomnia dream-disturbed sleep poor memory anxiety propensity to be startled dull pale complexion pale lips pale and thin tongue choppy or fine pulse
Heart Blood deficiency
Yin Deficiency with or without heat
can occur for a long time without empty heat…but eventually leads to empty heat
palpitations thirst mouth and tongue ulcers mental restlessness feeling agitated feeling of heat insomnia dream-disturbed sleep red face dark urine or blood in urine bitter taste red tongue, tip redder and swollen with red points yellow coating full-rapid-overflowing pulse
Heart Fire blazing
“Dian” or “insanity”
mental depression and dullness, muttering to oneself
Kuang or “violent behavior”
uncontrolled laughter or crying shouting violent behavior hitting or scolding people incoherent speech
Phlegm obstructing the mind
mental dullness mental illness (if combined with fire)
Palpitations thirst red face bitter taste feeling of oppression of the chest expectoration of phlegm rattling sounds in the throat mental restlessness insomnia dream disturbed sleep agitation incoherent speech mental confusion rash behavior tendency to hit or scold people uncontrolled laughter or crying shouting muttering to oneself mental depression and dullness manic behavior red tongue, redder & swollen tip with red points, yellow dry sticky coating, deep heart crack, full rapid, slippery pulse or rapid overflowing slippery, rapid full wiry pulse
Phlegm Fire Harassing the Heart
mental confusion unconsciousness, lethargic stupor incoherent speech vomiting phlegm rattling sound in the throat mental depression emotional lability aphasia very dull eyes swollen tongue with thick sticky coating, heart crack, slippery pulse
Phlegm Misting the mind
palpitations a feeling of distension or oppression of the chest depression a slight feeling of lump in the throat slight SOB sighing poor appetite slight nausea cold limbs sl purple lips pale complexion tongue sl pale -purple on sides and chest area pulse empty but very slightly overflowing on the left front position
HT Qi stagnation
only two HT patterns that involve chest pain
HT vessel obstructed & HT blood stasis
palpitations
SOB with inability to lay down
depression
mental restlessness
a feeling of oppression of the chest
stabbing or pricking pain in the heart region which comes and goes and which may radiate to the upper back or shoulder
pain aggravated by exposure to cold and alleviated by heat
expectoration of phlegm
a feeling of heaviness
dislike to speak
cold hands
sighing
purple lips, face and nails
tongue: purple o the sides in the chest area, swollen with a sticky coating
pulse: wiry, choppy or knotted, slippery if phlegm is predominant
HT Vessel Obstructed (red flag)
palpitations
stabbing or pricking pain in the chest which may radiate to the inner aspect of the left arm or to the shoulder
a feeling of oppression or constriction of the chest
cyanosis of lips and nails
cold hands
tongue purple in its entirety or only the sides n the chest area
choppy, wiry or knotted pulse
HT Blood stasis
a “feel” for heart pathology
mental emotional symptoms
pathology of mind reflected in the “shen” of the eyes
depression, anxiety, insomnia
