Heart Murmurs Flashcards
when would you hear aortic stenosis
early to mid systolic.
Where is aortic stenosis heard best?
over the base
Does aortic stenosis radiate?
yes, to the carotids
symptoms of aortic stenosis
- angina
- syncope
- dyspnea on exertion
what can cause aortic stenosis?
- degenerative calcification
- rheumatic disease
- bicuspid valve
Presents w/holocystolic murmur heard best at the apex =
mitral regurgitation
Does mitral regurgitation murmur radiate?
to the axilla
what could lead to mitral insufficiency
- rheumatic heart disease
- congenital
- acute MI w/papillary muscle dysfunction
- endocarditis
- calcification w/age
symptoms of mitral regurg
ACUTE = pulmonary edema & shortness of breath
CHRONIC = severe fatigue, atrial fibrillation
Presents as diastolic murmur heard best at APEX
mitral stenosis
characteristic of mitral stenosis murmur is..
low pitched rumble preceded by opening snap
causes of mitral stenosis
- rheumatic heart disease
2. rarely congenital
symptoms of mitral stenosis
- dyspnea w/exertion and cough
- hemoptysis (blood and sputum)
- arterial embolism
diastolic murmur head best at base with patient sitting
aortic regurgiation
Classic symptom of aortic regurg..
water hammer pulse due to the increased pulse pressure from increased stroke volume
