Heart Failure Flashcards
What are the two classifications of heart failure?
- Systolic heart failure: heart fails to pump blood out of the ventricles fully
- Diastolic heart failure: heart does not with blood efficiency
What are the symptoms of left-sided heart failure
Forward failure
1. Tiredness and fatigue: heart is not supplying enough blood to the body parts
2. Decreased urination: Due to lack of blood supply and reduced fluid loss
3. Irregular heart beats: to supply more blood
Backward failure
1. Pulmonary oedema: fluid back up in lungs to reduce pumping
2. Difficulty breathing : due to congestion and fluid build up in lungs
Weight gain: due to fluid build up
What are the symptoms of right-sided heart failure
Forward failure ( Can’t pump blood to the lungs)
1. Tiredness and fatigue
2. Irregular heart beats
Backward failure (Back up of blood in the body)
1. Oedema
2. Weight gain
3. Increased urination:
What are the treatment options for early stage heart failure
- Regular exercise
- Balanced diet (reduced salt and fat)
- Antihypertensive drugs (ACE inhibitors, nitrates, beta blockers)
What are the treatment options for later stage heart failure
- Diuretics:
- Aldosterone inhibitors
3.Calcium channel blockers
4.Antihypertensives: ACE inhibitors, nitrates and beta blockers
