Heart Failure Flashcards
What is systolic dysfunction?
inability of heart to contract or pump effectively
What is diastolic dysfunction?
inability of heart to relax or fill effectively
Heart failure can lead to what 2 things?
- decreased cardiac output
- decreased tissue perfusion
What 3 conditions that can cause acute heart failure?
- MI
- hypertensive crisis
- massive pulmonary embolism
What 3 conditions that can cause chronic heart failure?
- CAD
- HTN
- Diabetes
What are the 4 causes of left sided systolic heart failure?
- HTN
- CAD
- Dilated cardiomyopathy
- valvular disease
What are the 3 causes of left sided diastolic heart failure?
- hypertrophic cardiomyopathy
- restrictive cardiomyopathy
- HTN
What are the 2 types of dyspnea seen in left sided heart failure?
- orthopnea
- paroxysmal nocturnal dyspnea
What is the early sign & late sign in left sided heart failure?
- early sign is tachycardia
- late sign is altered mental status
What 3 charactertics can we describe about the lungs in the left sided heart failure?
- cough
- crackles
- frothy sputum
What are the 2 causes of right sided heart failure?
- left sided heart failure
- chronic lung disease
What are the 5 signs & symptoms of right sided heart failure?
- JVD
- edema
- ascites
- anorexia
- hepatomegaly
What is the formula for ejection fraction?
stroke volume/end diastolic volume x 100
What is the formula for stroke volume?
end diastolic volume - end systolic volume
What do diuretic medications help with in heart failure?
removes excess fluid
