Heart & Circulation Flashcards
What is cytoplasmic streaming?
Movement of oxygen, food, and wastes through the cell membrane, skin, and/or mouth.
What is an open circulatory system?
Blood is not contained in vessels, but instead surrounds the organs. (There is no guarantee that you’re getting everything where it needs to go.)
What is a closed circulatory system?
Blood is carried through blood vessels.
What is a two-chambered heart?
1 atrium & 1 ventricle (blood goes in atrium and shoots out ventricle.) {FISH}
What is a three-chambered heart?
2 atria & 1 ventricle, oxygenated blood from one atria and deoxygenated blood from the second atria mix in the single ventricle and then are pumped to skin, lungs, and body. {AMPHIBIANS +REPTILES}
What is a four-chambered heart?
2 atria & 2 ventricles, don’t mix oxygenated and deoxygenated blood because pulmonary circulation is separated from other circulation. {MAMMALS + BIRDS}
What is blood circulation?
transports oxygen and nutrients to cells and removes waste.
In what order does blood move through the blood vessels?

What is systemic circulation?
Blood travels between heart and other tissues.
What is blood pressure?
Blood exerts pressure against blood vessels. Measured with a sphygmomanometer. (NORMAL BP=120/80mmHg)
What is systolic? (Blood Pressure)
Ventricles contract, arteries under pressure
What is diastolic? (Blood Pressure)
ventricles relax, arteries less pressure
What is a heartbeat?
An electric impulse regulated by the pacemaker or SA (sinoatrial) node in the right atrium. Passed to AV (atrioventricular) node in septum that contracts the ventricles.
What is the 1st heartbeat sound?
Systole - ventricle contract, AV valves close
What is the 2nd heartbeat sound?
Diastole - Ventricle relax, Aortic and pulmonary valves close.
