Heart Based Tumours Flashcards
Survival times in dogs with right atrial hemangiosarcoma treated by means of surgical resection with or without adjuvant chemotherapy: 23 cases (1986–2000)
Weisse et al, 2005. JAVMA. U Penn
- Sx only, MST = 42 days ( n = 15)
- Sx + chemo, MST = 175 days ( n = 8)
Retrospective evaluation of canine heart base tumours treated
with toceranib phosphate (Palladia): 2011-2018
Lew et al, 2019. Vet Comp Oncol. Tufts
- single agent Palladia ORR = 10% (n = 27)
- 90% had improvement of clinical signs, 81% had complete resolution (no one needed pericardiocentesis)
- toxicity in 54% – mostly GI
- MST = 823 days, those presented with metastasis = 532 days (ORR = 28.5%)
those without metastasis = 796 days, no sig difference
Analysis of Factors Affecting Survival in Dogs With
Aortic Body Tumors
Ehrhart et la, 2002. Vet Surg. University of Illinois
- only treatment with pericardectomy had a significant influence on survival
- MST with pericardectomy = 730 days (without = 42 days)
Comparison of Presumptive Echocardiographic and Definitive
Diagnoses of Cardiac Tumors in Dogs
Rajagopalan et al. 2013. JVIM. U of Tennessee
- presumptive diagnosis of chemodectoma, ectopic thyroid carcinoma, or lymphoma in cases with heart base masses was correct in 7/9 cases
- presumptive diagnosis of hemangiosarcoma in cases with right atrial masses was correct in 4/8 cases
- so only moderate accuracy
Long-term outcomes with conventional fractionated and
stereotactic radiotherapy for suspected heart-base tumours
in dogs
Hansen et al 2020. Vet Comp Onco. UC Davis
- CFRT 50Gy in 20fx
- SBRT 30Gy in 5fx or 24Gy in 3fx
- MST = 785 days
- no statistical significance between CFRT or SBRT for MST
- 5/6 patients showed improvement
- 4/5 had mass reduction based on u/s
- complications: asymptomatic radiation pneumonitis, atrial tachycardia/premature beats, pericardial effusion
