Heart Flashcards
Flashcard Question
Flashcard Answer
What does the Cardiovascular System Consist Of?
Heart Blood Vessels Blood Pulmonary Circuit Systemic Circuit
Does the Blood ever leave the cardiovascular system?
No, it is a closed circuit
What is the Cardiovascular System responsible for?
- Transportation of Oxygenated blood to working muscles
- Transportation of gases and fuels
- Immunity,
- Cellular Repair and regrowth,
- Thermoregulation
What does the Respiratory System consist of?
Mouth
Nose
Airways
Lungs
What is the Respiratory System responsible for?
- Breath in air from the environment
- Transfer oxygen into the blood
- Remove carbon dioxide from the blood
- Return air back to the environment
- Create speech as air moves over the larynx
Name the 2 Upper Chambers of the Heart
Atria
Name the 2 Lower Chambers of the Heart
Ventricles
Is the Heart a Muscle?
Yes
Define Ventricles ?
Responsible for pumping blood throughout the body
Define Transversely ?
Horizontal plane dividing top from bottom
Define Superior ?
Upper part of the heart
Define Inferior ?
Lower part of the heart
Define Sagittal ?
Division of the body into right & left halves
Define Oxygenated Blood ?
Left side of the heart delivers it to the body
Define Deoxygenated Blood ?
Right side of the heart has this blood that travels to the lungs to remove carbon dioxide and gather more oxygen
Define Systole ?
- Pumping
- contraction of the heart muscle
- blood out of ventricles and into the arteries
Define Diastole ?
- Filling
- relaxation phase of the heart beat.
- heart fills with blood from the veins
How many beats does the heart make per day
100,000
How long does it take to complete a heartbeat?
Less than 1 second
What are the 4 stages of the Cardiac Cycle?
Stage 1 – Atrial Diastole
Stage 2 – Ventricular Diastole
Stage 3 – Atrial Systole
Stage 4 – Ventricular Systole
Describe Stage 1 of the Cardiac Cycle
The atria fill with blood returning from two key areas - the body and the lungs. Blood from the body returns through the vena cava into the right atrium. Blood from the lungs returns through the pulmonary vein into the left atrium. The heart valves remain shut.
Describe Stage 2 of the Cardiac Cycle
The pressure build up in the atria causes the bicupsid and tricuspid valves to open. Blood Flows into the Ventricles. Then the valves shut again.
Describe Stage 3 of the Cardiac Cycle
The Atria contract and blood is forced into the ventricles and pressure increases to become greater than that in the aorta and pulmonary artery
Describe Stage 4 of the Cardiac Cycle
The Pulmonary valce and aortic valve at the top of the heart both open and the ventricles contract, forcing blood into the Arta to move to the rest of the body, or into the pulmonary artery to go to the lungs.
Define Systemic Circulation ?
Left side of heart pumps oxygen rich blood to the entire body
Define Pulmonary Circulation ?
Right side of the heart receives oxygen poor blood and then pumps to lungs to get re-oxygenated
What is Strock Volume (SV) ?
How much blood is squeezed out of the heart in one beat
What is the Average Adults resting SV ?
70-90ml.
How much does SV increase during exercise ?
approx. 40%
What is the Heart Rate ?
Number of beats the heart makes per minute
What is Cardiac Output (Q) ?
Amount of blood pumped out of the heart per minute
What is Cardiac Output (Q) formula ?
Cardiac Output (Q) = Stroke Volume (SV) x Heart Rate
