Heart Flashcards
Right pulmonary artery
carries oxygen-poor blood into the right lung
Left pulmonary artery
carries oxygen-poor blood into the left lung
Right/Left pulmonary vein
carries oxygenated blood from the lungs to the left atrium of the heart
Right atrium
receives oxygen-poor blood from the body
Left atrium
receives oxygen-rich blood from the lungs
Bicuspid valve (Mitral valve)
prevents back flow of blood from the left ventricle to the left atrium
Right ventricle
contracts to pump oxygen-poor blood along the pulmonary arteries to the lungs
Left ventricle
contracts to pump oxygen-rich blood along the aorta to the rest of the body
Septum
the muscular wall that divides the heart into right and left halves
Inferior vena cava
carries oxygen-poor blood from the legs and abdomen to the right atrium
Superior vena cava
carries oxygen-poor blood from the head and upper body to the right atrium
Semilunar valves
either of two valves, one located at the opening of the aorta and the other at the opening of the pulmonary artery, each consisting of three crescent-shaped cusps and serving to prevent blood from flowing back into the ventricles
Tricuspid valve
prevents backflow of blood from the right ventricle to the right atrium
Aorta
pumps oxygen rich blood to the body tissues
