Heart Flashcards
cardiovascular system
The Cardiovascular system is a system of blood vessels, all going to and from the heart…transport oxygen etc…This network takes out waste, and discards it, while maintaining important elements in the body.
chambers
The Chambers are the “rooms” of the heart. These consist of the Atriums (Top Sections), and the ventricles (Bottoms Sections).
walls
The walls of the heart are responsible for the contracting (squeezing) and relaxing to send blood throughout the body.
septum
A layer in the middle of the heart divides it into two left and rights sides
layers of the heart - inner
Endocardium - Inner
middle layer
Myocardium - Middle Muscular Layer
outer layer
Epicardium - [PROTECTIVE] Outer Layer
top part of the heart
atriums
bottom part of the heart
ventricles
right atrium
is responsible for receiving oxygen deficient blood from two large veins (Superior and Inferior Vena Cava[s]).
left atrium
is responsible for receiving oxygen from the pulmonary veins. The pulmonary veins bring oxygen-filled blood from the lungs to the left atrium.
right ventricle
pumps oxygen-deficient blood to the lungs to get more oxygen
left ventricle
takes oxygen-sufficient blood, and pumps it to the rest of the body
heart valves
open and close to allow blood to flow properly
atrioventricular valves
open between upper and lower chambers (tricuspid, mitral)
tricuspid valve
between right and left atrium
