Hearing and Sound Flashcards
Sound is the result of
vibration
The larger the vibration the _________the sound
louder
The faster the vibration the __________ of the sound
higher the pitch
Sound can travel through a variety of materials, including
solids, liquids, and air
Sound travels best through_________
solids
Sound travels in _____________
all directions
10-65 dB
safe range for human hearing
hearing damage risk
85-90 dB
100-140 dB
danger zone for hearing damage
How can you change the pitch on a stringed instrument?
- change the length of the string (long=low, short=high)
- Tighten the strings (loose=low, tight=high)
- change the thickness of the string (thick=low, thin=high)
How did shortening and lengthening the air columns change the pitch in the pan pipes experiments?
The pitch changed. The shorter straws vibrated faster and had a higher pitch. The longer straws vibrated slower and had a lower pitch.
List three sounds that are safe to hear
whispering, talking, iPad timer, breeze
List three sounds that can damage hearing
jet plane, yelling, gun shot, power tools, headphones at full volume
pitch
the highness or lowness of a musical note, different pitches have different frequencies
vibrations
movements backwards/forwards, up and down
volume
how loud or soft a sound is
microphone
amplifying device
megaphone
a funnel (cone) shaped device for amplifying or directing sound
frequency
the number of sound vibrations per second
decibel
a unit used to measure sound intensity, abbreviated as dB
out ear (pinna)
visible part of the ear which is made of skin and cartilage
middle ear
three tiny bones (hammer, anvil, stirrup) that form a bridge between the ear drum and the inner ear.
inner ear
inside the ear the coiled tube called the cochlea. the cochlea is filled with fluid and nerve endings
list ways to take care of your ears
dry your ears, never stick q-tips in your ears, wear ear protection around loud sounds (ear plugs)
How do human’s make sound?
Inside the larynx there are 2 thin bands called vocal cords. When air is pushed past the vocal cords they vibrate and make sounds
What sounds can people make?
snoring, whistling, burping, humming, snapping, clapping
The __________ sends chemical messages to the brain.
auditory nerve
ear drum
a sheet of skin that is stretched across the entrance to the middle ear
semicircular canals
three looped tubes in the inner ear - these help us to balance
