communication
conveying information through the exchange of ideas, feelings, or attitudes
non-verbal communication
anything that your body does to convey a message to another individual without using words (eye contact, facial expression, space, posture)
passive communicator
avoid expressing their opinions or feelings, protecting their rights, and identifying/meeting their needs
aggressive communicator
express their feelings and opinions and advocate their needs in a verbally/physically abusive manner
assertive communicator
clearly state opinions and feelings and advocate for their rights without violating the rights of others
bullying
a repeated pattern of harmful/rejecting behavior that occurs over a period of time leaving you feeling excluded, isolated, or humiliated on a large scale
sexting
act of sending sexually explicit messages, primarily via text message
sexual harassment
unwelcome sexual advances that do not stop after effected party asks and create a hostile/offensive environment
verbal abuse
name calling, put downs, harsh tone of voice
emotional abuse
playing mind games, trying to make partner feel guilty, humiliating partner, keeping partner away from family and friends, jealousy and possessiveness, making all decisions in the relationship, threatening to harm self or others
physical abuse
pushing, spitting, shoving, pinching, attempting to inflict physical injury, physically restraining partner, killing
sexual abuse
making unwanted comments about partner’s body, pressuring partner into having sex, attempting unwanted sexual contact, rape or sexual assault
economic abuse
attempting to make partner financially dependent, controlling partner’s money, forcing partner to ask for and justify the need for money, threatening to leave unless the partner gives him/her money
rape
an act of forced or coerced oral, anal, or vaginal penetration
date rape
a form of acquaintance rape that refers to attempted or completed non consensual sexual acts that occur within a dating relationship
stranger rape
refers to attempted or completed non consensual sexual acts committed by a person unknown to the victim
acquaintance rape
refers to attempted or completed non consensual sexual acts committed by someone known to the victim, such as a classmate or neighbor
sexual assault
unwanted sexual acts, ranging from exposing genitals to penetration, that involves threats, physical force, intimidation, or deception
relationship abuse
a pattern of behavior that is aimed at gaining and maintaining control of a partner
intimacy
being close to someone and sharing personal things (feelings, ideas, hopes, desires, etc.)
passion
strong emotional feelings that move you to express things verbally and physically
commitment
pledging yourself to another person by promising to be true and faithful
