Healthy organs 3. Respiratory System Flashcards
What is the function of the respiratory system?
The lungs and respiratory system allow us to breathe. They bring oxygen into our bodies (called inhalation) and send carbon dioxide out (called exhalation). This exchange of oxygen and carbon dioxide is called respiration.
Name 3 structures of the Respiratory system
Any 3 of the following, mouth/nose, trachea, lungs, ribs, intercostal muscles and diaphragm.
What is the function of the rings of cartilage?
These rings are C-shaped and support the trachea but also allow it to move and flex when you breathe.
What is the function of the ribs?
The rib cage protects the organs in the chest as well as helping with respiration,
What is the function of the diaphragm during breathing
The diaphragm pulls up and down during breathing causing our lings to inflate and deflate.
Upon inhalation, the diaphragm contracts (pulls down and flattens and the chest cavity enlarges. This contraction creates a vacuum, which pulls air into the lungs.
Upon exhalation, the diaphragm relaxes (pushes down) and returns to its domelike shape, and air is forced out of the lungs
Name 3 structures inside the lungs
Bronchus, Bronchioles and Alveoli (air-sacs)
What do the alveoli do?
These are tiny air sacs at the end of the bronchiole.
The alveoli are where the lungs and the blood exchange oxygen and carbon dioxide during the process of breathing in and breathing out.
Oxygen breathed in from the air passes through the alveoli and into the blood and travels to the tissues throughout the body.
Carbon dioxide travels in the blood from the body’s tissues and passes through the alveoli to be breathed out.
What other body system does the respiratory system work closely with?
The circulatory system.
What chemicals can damage?
Your lungs can be damaged if you breathe in cigarette smoke/vapes, air pollution or dusts and fumes in the workplace over a sustained period of time.
What disease can smoking cause?
Smoking causes cancer, heart disease, stroke, lung diseases, diabetes, and COPD, which includes emphysema and chronic bronchitis.
How do you keep your lungs healthy
The best way to keep your lungs pink and healthy is not to smoke.
You can also show your love for your lungs by exercising! Exercise is good for every part of your body, and especially for your lungs and heart.
