Healthy Communities Planning Flashcards
Healthy Community
must enable residents and visitors to live a healthy, active lifestyle.
Active lifestyle
the ability to engage in at least 30 minutes of daily physical activity - recommended by CDC.
Health impact assessment (HIA)
A series of six steps combining multiple data sources and analytical methods to identify the potential health impacts a proposed plan, policy, program, or project could have on a specific population group or the population of an area.
Six steps of an health impact assessment
1) Screening: determine if conducting an HIA adds value to the decision-making process
2) Scoping: identifying the pathways connecting the proposed plan, program, policy, or project to a health consideration
3) Assessment: gathering and analyzing data to determine the health impacts
4) Recommendations: developing health-related recommendations to inform the proposed plan, program, policy or project’s decision-making process
5) Reporting: sharing the results and recommendations of the HIA
6) Monitoring/evaluation: monitoring and evaluating the implementation of the HIA recommendations
Four different types of HIAs
rapid, desktop, intermediate, and comprehensive. Type is determined during the screening process.
Food systems planning
refers to a coordinated approach that increases the amount of food available in the community, monitors the production and disposal of food, and coordinates the selling of food in an area. Involves policies, assessments, and the implementation of various strategies
Local or regional food assessment
Identifies what assets or gaps an area has regarding its food system. Might identify a food desert or a food swamp.
Aging in place
living in the same home as you grow older and experience limited mobility. Staying in the community you prefer versus moving to an assisted living facility. Planning entails ensuring an elderly population can access services they need.
