Individual human development
The series of orderly predictable changes that occur from conception until death
Development is PIES physical intellectual emotional social
Puberty definition
Biological changes that occur during youth and prepare the individual for sexual reproduction
Physical development
Refers to the changes that occur to the body and its systems
Mortality
Number of deaths caused by a particular disease,illness or environmental factor
Morbidity
Refers to the ill health of a group, individual or overall population
Burden of disease
A measure of the impact of injuries and diseases
Measures the gap between current health status and ideal status (living disease free to elderly age)
YLD’s
Years of life lost due to disability
A measure of how many healthy years of life are lost due to illness injury or disease
YLL
Years of life lost
A measure of how many years of expected life is lost due to premature death
DALY’s
Disability adjusted life years
A measure of burden of disease
1 DALY = 1 year of YLL & YLD
Health definition
A complete state of physical, social and mental wellbeing, and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity
Social health
Being able to interact with others and participate in the community both
Independently & cooperatively
Mental health
A state of wellbeing in which an individual can
- cope with stress
- work productively
- make community contributions
- realise own potentials and abilities
Health status
An individual or populations overall health, taking into account various aspects
- life expectancy
- disease risk factors
- disability level
Life expectancy
An indication of how long a person can expect to live, number of years remaining if current death rates do not change
Incidence
Number of new cases of a disease in a population at a given time
