What is Approved Codes of Practice
Approved Codes of Practice as defined in the HSE’s “Health and safety regulation a short guide”. They offer practical examples of good practice. They give advice on how to comply with the law by, for example, providing a guide to what is ‘reasonably practicable.

What was the Hackitt Review?
A series of 53 recomendations to improve safety of construction and buildings. Her recomendations formed “Building a safer future review” which identified unsatisfactory processes and practices within the industry.

What is a risk assessment
A risk assessment is a systematic method of looking at work activities, considering what could go wrong, and deciding on suitable control measures.
What is HASWA 1974
HASWA is a piece of primary Health and Safety legislation in the UK and was introduced in 1974, was updated in the 90s with the six-pack regulations including PPE regulations and manual handling operations regulations. It places the following duties on employers;
Ensure the health, safety and welfare of employees at work
Other persons are not exposed to health and safety risks
The premises are safe and without risk
What are the time limits for reporting an incident under RIDDOR 2013?
- For the majority of incidents, report to be issued within 10 days of the incident.
- For incident resulting in employee being away for more than seven consecutive days, report to be issued within 15 days of the incident.
- For occupational disease, report to be issued as soon as the responsible person receives confirmation of the diagnosis.
What is RIDDOR 2013 and what is the key duty it places on the ‘responsible person’?
- The Reporting of Injuries, Diseases and Dangerous Occurrences Regulations 2013.
- Key duty on employer, self-employed or individual in control of work premises (classified as the ‘responsible person’) to report certain injuries, diseases or dangerous occurrences to the relevant enforcing authority.
When can a building notice not be used?
- Building work to which the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005 apply (such as commercial or industrial buildings).
- Building works within 3m of a public sewer.
