What is public liability insurance?
Public liability insurance covers the cost of claims made by members of the public for incidents that occur in connection with your business activities.
Public liability insurance covers the cost of compensation for:
personal injuries
loss of or damage to property

What does RIDDOR stand for, what is it and when was it introduced?
Reporting of Injuries, Diseases and Dangerous Occurrences Regulations 1995.
- If an incident occurs and the member of staff is incapacitated for more than 7 days, the incident must be reported to HSE within 15 days from the date of the incident.
- Employers must keep a log book of all 3 day plus injuries
- Information should be kept in an accident book which must be stored for at least 3 years from the date of the previous injury
How did the Fire Safety Act 2021 affect commercial premises?
- Communal spaces must have adequate fire doors in place eg shopping centres
- For multiple occupied buildings there must be a responsible person who is easily identifiable to the fire brigade. Must be plans available to the fire brigade.
- Annual fire alarm tests and FRA must be undertaken
How does the Occupiers Liability Act 1957 impact property owners/business and property managers?
Occupiers have a responsibility to prevent harm to lawful visitors

Fines of up to £20,000 and 12 months in prison for any breaches of health and safety legislation eg using asbestos in buildings. More severe cases can be passed to the high court
What is the aim of CDM Regulations 2015 and what are some examples of regulations detailed in the CDM Regulations 2015?
Aims to improve the management of H&S through stages of a construction project
- Criminal offence to breach CDM regulations
- All projects must have a client, principal designer and principal contractor
- Must have a construction phase plan, risk assessments and a H&S file before beginning work
- HSE must be informed if works last longer than 30 days with 20 or more workers working simultaneously on site or if the work involves demolition.

- Owners of buildings must to do their best to accommodate people otherwise they can be sued for discrimination under the 2010 Equality Act
- New builds must be DDA compliant or Building Control won’t sign them off

What is the difference between a risk and a hazard?
A Hazard is something that has the potential to harm you. Risk is the likelihood of a hazard causing harm.
What are COSHH Regulations?
Control of Substances Hazardous to Health (COSHH) Regulations 2002, employers need to control exposure to substances or materials that cause harm to health. Examples include dust, gases, fumes, liquids, gels and powders from sources such as paint, cleaners, solder fumes, blood and waste. Risk assessment is required to identify the health hazards, prevent harm, take control measures and provide training, monitoring and emergency planning

What is the basic approach to undertaking risk assessments under Surveying Safely 2018?
1 identify the hazards
2 decide who might be harmed and how
3 evaluate the risks and decide on precautions
4 record the findings and implement controls
5 review the assessment on a pre determined basis eg annually and update if necessary
6 advise all those affected of the outcome of the assessment and methods of work, or
other control measures necessary, to minimise or eliminate risk.
Organisational Responsibilities for Health and Safety?
Selection - All employees are capable of meeting the needs of their role
Training - employees are given the correct training to do their role
Information - providing staff with information about the risks and control measures associated with their working environment.
Equipment - providing staff with the correct equipment so they are able to do their job
Safe Systems of Work - Systems in place to ensure safety eg lone working policy
