What are predisposing, reinforcing and enabling factors

A

Behavioural and environmental factors that affect whether behavioural change will occur:

  • Predisposing: personal or population motivating factors: an individual’s knowledge, beliefs, values, and attitudes
  • Enabling: environmental factors: programs, services, availability and accessibility of resources, or new skills required to enable behavior change
  • Reinforcing: rewards or punishments for behaviours: social support, peer support, etc

What are the levels of the intervention ladder?

A

Intervention ladder: balancing the intrusion of HP interventions on autonomy

  1. Do nothing
  2. Provide information
  3. Enable choice e.g. bicycle lanes
  4. Guide choices through changing default policy e.g. change the standard side dish from chips to veg
  5. Guide choice through incentives
  6. Guide choices through disincentives e.g. tobacco
  7. Restrict choice e.g. soft drink size
  8. Eliminate choice e.g. isolate people with infectious disease
