Health & Memory(memory Disorders) Flashcards
Why is sleep important ?
Sleep as a brain state is optimised for memory consolidation
What are the effects of sleep deprivation ?
Sleep deprivation affects your cognitive performance and affects the functioning of the hippocampus
Can exercise improve memory ?
Yes because it produces norepinephrine
Synaptic consolidation
Remodelling of the synapses each time a memory is formed
System consolidation
Transference of memories from hippocampus to areas of the cortex
Posterior Cingulate
The brain area involved in the formation of long term memories
What is amnesia ?
Amnesia is a type of memory disorder
There are three types highlighted
1. Retrograde amnesia
2. Anterograde amnesia
3. Infantile amnesia
How do people get amnesia ?
Neurosurgery
Strokes
Head injury
Viruses
Korsakoff’s syndrome
Retrograde amnesia
Usually temporary
It is the loss of previously encoded information from before a defined event
Anterograde amnesia
Inability it encode new information after a defined event
Infantile amnesia
Inability to remember memories from the first few years Of our lives
Typically we are unable or remember events before the age of 3
Why does infantile amnesia occur ?
Because of the immaturity of our brain regions that encode long term episodic memories
Memory type impairment
- your non declarative memories are spared because they are stored elsewhere as well as short term memory
- you’re declarative memories are impaired because of where they are stored
What is Alzheimer’s disease ?
A progressive brain disorder that is the most common cause of dementia amongst adults over the age of 65
It is the leading source of morbidity and mortality in ageing pop.
What are the risk factors of Alzheimer’s ?
Age, education , genetics (ApoE4 gene)
