They research, develop, produce and distribute drugs to treat disease.

because they decide which drugs to develop and what prices to charge them at
Pharmaceuticals- Research and production
More profit in wealthier countries- target diseases that affect wealthier countries more- improved health in wealthier.
Some use profits made from wealthier countries to fund research into diseases that affect poorer countries

Drugs cost a lot to develop, make that back from sales
exclusive rights over drugs for 20 years- so can set any price
Affects global health because some countries can afford them.

decreasing in wealthier countries, becoming a huge problem elswhere.
80% of smokers live in poorer countries
How many people die a year from tobacco related illnesses?
4 million, DR rising because most tobacco related illnesses take years to develop.
Why are tobacco related illnesses related more with wealthier countries?
because people in wealthier countries tend to live long enough for them to develop.
Why are poor countries developing getting more tobacco related illnesses?
because their life expectancies are rising.
What did the WHO do to protect public health in 2003?
‘Framework Convention on Tobacco Control’
A treaty that restricts tobacco advertising, regulating the contents of tobacco products, making sure they’re packaged and labelled correctly and who they are sold to.
What is a unforseen consequence of the FCTC?
tobacco companies, to keep revenue up, are targeting countries that havent signed the WHO treaty so have fewer restrictions.
Aggresive marketing and targeting vulnerable population (young people) and their lack of knowledge.
