Illness
An abnormal process in which the functioning of a person is diminished or impaired in one or more dimensions
Health
A state of complete physical, mental and social well being, not merely the absence of disease or infirmity
Health-illness continuum
Health is a dynamic state that is continually changing as a person adapts to changes in the internal and external environment to maintain a state of physical, emotional, intellectual, social, development, and spiritual well being
Maslow’s basic human needs
1) Physiological needs
2) safety and security needs
3) love and belonging needs
4) self esteem needs
5) self- actualization needs
Physiological Needs
Oxygen, fluids, nutrition, body temp., elimination, shelter, sex
Safety and security needs
Physical safety, psychological safety
Love and belonging needs
Feeling loved and wanted, social relationships.
Self esteem needs
Worth something, achieve goals
Self actualization needs
Achieve ones full potential.
Levels of preventive care
1) primary level
2) secondary level
3) tertiary level
Primary prevention
True prevention. Precedes disease or dysfunction and is applied to patients considered physically and emotionally healthy.
Secondary prevention
Focuses on individuals who are experiencing health problems or illnesses and are at risk for developing complications or worsening conditions. Activities are directed at diagnosis and prompt intervention thereby reducing the severity and enabling the patient to return to a normal level of health
Tertiary level
Disease is permanent and irreversible. Involves minimizing the effects of the long term disease or disability by interventions directed at preventing complications and deterioration.
Acute illness
Onset: sudden and abruptly
Duration: short lived. Usually less than 6 months.
Disease course: symptoms can be severe but can be relieved readily.
Ex: common cold
Chronic illness
Onset: insidious, develops over time.
Duration: usually last longer than 6 months
Disease course: irreversible, and affects functioning in one or more systems.
Ex: cancer
