A state of complete physical, mental and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity
What is fitness?
The ability to meet/cope with the demands of the environment
What is well-being?
A mix of physical, social and mental well-being that give people a sense of being comfortable, healthy and happy
What is the relationship between health and fitness?
Being healthy includes a physical component,you would expect them to have an appropriate level of fitness to meet the demands of the environment
If fitness improves, what results will we see?
Reduces injury
Makes you feel more content/happy
Makes it easier for you to complete physical work
What are the physical benefits for physical exercise?
Improve heart function - more efficient for exercise
Improve the efficiency of body systems and allows you to exercise longer
Protect against many diseases
Reduce the risk of illness and obesity
What are the social benefits of physical exercise?
Improves opportunities to socialise
Improves self esteem

What are the mental benefits of physical exercise?
Reduce stress/tension levels Release fee-good hormones in the body such as endorphins and dopamine More resilience Better sleep Reduces anxiety and depression
What is a sedentary lifestyle?
A person’s lifestyle choice to have no or irregular physical activity
What is the definition of obesity?
An individual with large fat content, caused by an imbalance of calories consumed to energy expenditure. Has a body mass index (BMI) of over 30.
What are the consequences of a sedentary lifestyle?
Weight gain, possibly could lead to obesity
Increased risk of heart disease and diabetes
High risk of poor sleep patterns
Poor self esteem
Feeling of tiredness and lethargy
Increased risk of hypertension - high blood pressure in the arteries
What is somatotypes?
Somatotyping is a way of classifying body types. It takes into account height, weight, body fat, muscle and build.
What are the characteristics of a ectomorph?
Tall

Not much fat or muscle
What are the characteristics of a mesomorph?
Muscular

What are the characteristics of a endomorph?
Large content of fat
Large diet

Explain what the most suitable somatotype is for a marathon runner?
Ectomorph, this is because they need to carry less mass so they can become less fatigued and maintain a good speed through the race. This allows them to run faster without using energy.
Explain what the most suitable somatotype is for a rugby player?
Endomorph, this is because they will carry a lot of body mass to be strong when they go into tackles. It makes it difficult for opposing players when pushing against them in a scrum or ruck
Explain why it is important to have a balanced diet?
Too much food could mean that any unused energy is stored as fat, which could cause obesity
Enough energy should be consumed so it is available for activity or the person may start to lose weight and feel tired
The body needs nutrients for energy, growth and hydration to stay healthy
