DALY
Disability adjusted life years.
One DALY represents on year of healthy life lost due to premature death and time lived with illness, disease or injury
Wellbeing
State of being comfortable, healthy or happy
Physical health
Relates to the efficient functioning of the body and it’s systems, and includes the physical capacity to perform tasks and physical fitness
Social health
Being able to interact with others and participate in the community in both an individual and cooperative way
Mental health
State of wellbeing in which the individual realizes his or her own abilities, can cope with the normal stresses of life, can work productively and fruitfully, and is able to make a contribution to his or her own community
Morbidity
Refers to ill health I’m an individual or levels of ill health in a population
Mortality
Refers to deaths in a population
Prevalence
Refers to the total number of cases of a condition at a given time
Incidence
Refers to the number of new cases of a condition at a given time
Life Expectancy
An indication of how long a person can expect to live if the current death rates remain unchanged
Burden of disease
A measure of the impact of diseases and injuries: specifically it measures the gap between the current health status and an ideal health status where everyone lives to an old age and is free of disease and disability. Measured in DALY’s
Genetic Predisposition
An inherited tendency to exhibit certain traits or develop certain conditions based on genetic make up
Define health
A state of complete physical, social and mental week being and not merely the absence of disease
