Consequences of Poor Health Communication
increased confusion, lack of understanding and patient dissatisfaction with doctor can reduce adherence to medical advice.
Questioning
Helps the patient be actively involved in the consult, clarifies things and provides information. Questions should be open ended.
Non-verbal Communicating
Major determinant of the quality of the interaction. Includes touch, eye contact, facial expression, body language and paralinguistics (tone, pitch etc).
Interactional Synchrony
Coordinated non-verbal actions between the patient and doctor. Puts patient at ease and helps build trust.
Bedside Manner
Empathy, non-verbal communication, optimism and rapport. Enhances the BPS process and ensures more complete health management.
Optimism
Tendency to see things positively and expect positive outcomes. Can be difficult to maintain due to medico-legal issues.
Empathy
Being sensitive to another persons changing feelings and responding in a way that conveys interest and understanding.
Communication Between Doctor and Patient
Communication between the patient and practitioner is an unequal power/knowledge relationship.
