Coping
Engaging in behavioural/cognitive efforts to deal with demands.
Preventative Strategies
Avoid stressors, adjust demands, develop coping mechanisms and draw on social support.
Combative Strategies
Monitor stressors, use resources, attack stressors (problem-solving), tolerate stressors (denial) and lower arousal (self-medication).
Problem-focused Coping
Efforts to improve the situation by changing things.
Planning, assertive action and using informational social support.
Emotion-focused Coping
Thoughts or actions to relieve stress. Don’t actually change the situation.
Emotional support, denial, avoidance and positive reappraisal.
Stress Management Techniques
Nutrition, exercise, humour, relaxation, assertiveness training, cognitive therapy and stress inoculation.
Stress Inoculation
Education - given a framework for understanding stress response
Rehearsal - learns to make cognitive self statements as a form of coping
Application - use new skills in actual stress situations
