Secondary Health Science Education (HSE)
- Prepare a student for immediate employment in many health careers (or additional education) after graduating high school
Post Secondary Education
- Training for SPECIFIC careers in technical school, community college, or a university.
Associate’s degree
- Career/ technical school or community college
- 2-year course of study
Bachelor’s degree
- College or university
- 4 or more years of study
Master’s degree
- College or university
- 1 or more years of work after bachelor’s degree
Doctorate/Doctoral degree
- College or university
- 2 or more years of work beyond a bachelor’s or master’s degree (4-6 years of additional study)
What do certification, registration, and licensure measure?
- The skill and competency of healthcare personnel and protect the patient
Certification
- Fulfilled requirements of education and performance
- Meets the standards and qualifications of the agency that regulates the career
- Ex. Dental assistant, Certified lab tech., Certified med. assistant, etc.
Registration
- Testing performed by a regulatory agency that maintains a list of qualified personnel in a given area.
- Ex. Registered Dietician, Registered Nurse, Registered Radiologic Technician, etc.
Licensure
- Government agency authorizes individuals to work in certain occupations
- License defines SCOPE OF PRACTICE, or what the specific healthcare worker can legally perform on patients.
- Ex. Physician, dentist, physical therapist, registered nurse, etc.
Accreditation
- Before gaining any certification, you must graduate from an ACCREDITED health program
- Accreditation ensures the programs you are taking are competent and sufficient
Continuing Education Units
- Required extra hours of education to:
- Renew license
- Maintain certification and registration
Professional Organizations
- Organizations that are associated with a specific career
- The organization often provides benefits for the members that join it, including:
- Giving members accurate information regarding the career (aka Professional Development
- Career information to the public
- Monitoring laws relating to practicing that career
- Certification exams
- Grants for research and education
- A code of ethics
Multicompetent/Multiskilled Workers
- Workers who can perform a variety of tasks
- Ex. Being both an EEG tech and EKG tech
Entrepreneur
- Organizes and manages a business and assumes its risks
Therapeutic Service Careers
- Careers in health care that are directed towards changing the health status of the patient over time

- Places where al types of dental conditions are treated in people of all ages
Endodontics
- Treatment of the pulp, nerves, blood vessels, and roots of the teeth

- Alignment of the teeth

- Surgery on the jaw, mouth, teeth, and facial bones
- Maxillofacial surgery
Pedodontics
- Dental treatment of children and adolescents
Periodontics
- Treatment and prevention of diseases in the gums, bones, and supporting structures
Prosthodontics
- Replacement of natural teeth with artificial pieces (dentures or artificial teeth)
Dentists (DMD or DDS)
- Doctors who examine teeth, perform corrective surgery, and prevent dental disease
Dental hygienists (DH)
- Work under the supervision of dentists
- Preliminary examinations, remove stains and deposits, apply cavity-preventing agents, etc.
Dental laboratory technicians (DLT)
- Make/repair a variety of dental PROSTHESES (artificial devices)
Dental assistants (DA)
- Work under the supervision of dentists, prepare patients for exams, pass instruments, etc.
First Responder
- First person to arrive at the scene of an illness/injury
- Can be anyone!
- A CFR (Certified first responder) course may be taken to gain certain skills
Emergency medical technicians basic (EMT-B)
- Provide care for a wide range of illnesses
- Ex. Bleeding, fractures, basic life support (BLS), emergency childbirth, etc.
Emergency medical technician defibrillator (EMT-D)
- EMT-Bs with additional training that can administer electrical defib. to certain heart attack victims
Emergency medical technician intermediate (EMT-I)
- Perform the same tasks as EMT-B with additional responsibility:
- Assessing patients, interpreting EKGs, managing shock, using intravenous equipment
Emergency medical technician PARAMEDIC (EMT-P)
- All EMT duties plus advanced cardiac life support (ACLS), endotracheal intubation, drug administration, and using complex equipment
Physicians
- Examine patients, order tests, and diagnose/treat diseases and disorders
Physicians: Doctor of Medicine (MD)
- Diagnose, treat, and prevent disease
- Can specialize
Physicians: Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (DO)
- Place special emphasis on nervous and musculoskeletal systems, as well as the body, mind, and emotions.
- May also specialize
Physicians: Doctor of Podiatric Medicine (DPM)
- Examines, diagnoses, and treats diseases/ disorders of the feet or of the leg below the knee
Physicians: Doctor of Chiropractic (DC)
- Focuses on proper alignment of the spine and optimization of the nervous and muscular systems to stay healthy
Physician assistants (PA)
- Work under physician supervision
- Take med. histories, perform routine physical examinations, make prelim diagnoses, treat minor injuries, etc.
Medical Assistants (MA)
- Work under physician supervision
- Prepare patients for examinations and assist physicians in examinations
Psychiatrists
- Physicians who specialize in diagnosing and treating mental illness
Psychologists
- Study human behavior to help individuals deal with problems of everyday living
Psychiatric/mental health technicians
- Help patients and families follow treatment and rehab. plans given by psychiatrists or psychologists
Social Workers (SW)
- Help people make life adjustments and refer patients to community resources for assistance
Genetic Counselors
- Provide information about genetic diseases/ conditions
Funeral directors/ morticians/ undertakers
- Provide support for survivors, interview the family to establish details for funeral ceremonies, prepare the body following legal requirements, make arrangements for the burial/cremation, etc.
Embalmers
- PREPARE the body by washing it with germicidal soap, replacing blood with embalming fluid, reshaping the body, etc.
Mortuary assistants
- Assist w/ body prep, drive the hearse to pick up the body, write records, etc.
