Health Belief Models Flashcards
Theory Of Planned Behaviour (who said it)
Ajzen
TOPB basis
Based on premise that behaviour is predicted by intention to perform a behaviour
TOPB Key factors
ATTITUDE- belief about the outcome of a behaviour/how important that behaviour is to the individual
SOCIAL NORM- belief about others approval of a behaviour x how much individual cares about receiving the individuals approval)
PERCEIVED BEHAVIOURAL CONTROL- belief about how able someone feels they are to carry out the behaviour
Social Cognitive Theory (who said it)
Bandura
SCT basis
Concept of expectancies- 3 main forms said to influence goals and subsequent behaviour
SCT Main forms
Situation-Outcome expectancies (what will occur if no change made)
Outcome Expectancies (what outcome of given behaviour will be)
Self-efficacy expectancies (degree individual perceives they are capable of performing behaviour)
Leventhal’s Common Sense Model of Illness
Individuals as holding sets of health beliefs referred to as illness perceptions which influence an individual’s coping behaviour
LCSMI Five Core Beliefs
Identity (symptoms + label individual uses to describe their condition)
Time-Line (individual considers it short-term, cyclical or chronic)
Consequences (impact of illness on daily life)
Cure/Control (whether individual thinks can be cured/controlled)
Causes
COM-B and Behaviour Change Wheel (who did it)

COMB + BCW Belief
Behaviour is influenced by an individua’s capability, opportunity and motivation, which act on behaviour and in turn can be influenced by that behaviour
COMB + BCW Belief Facts
Capable- to change behaviour must be capable
Motivated- Must take account of conscious decision making
Opportunity- Factors must allow individual to do it
