what is health and wellbeing
relates to the state of a person’s physical, mental, social, emotional and spiritual existence and is characterised by an equilibrium in which the individual feels happy, healthy, capable and engaged.
what is health status
relates to an individual’s or a population’s overall health, taking into account various aspects such as life expectancy, amount of disability and levels of disease risk factors.
measured by a range of indicators
HSI - life expectancy
an indication of how long a person can expect to live. It is the number of years of life remaining to a person at a particular age if death rate does not change.
HSI - mortality rate
the number of deaths caused by a particular disease, illness or other environmental factor
HSI - maternal mortality rate (MMR)
the number of deaths per 100,000 women as a result of child birth
HSI - infant mortality rate (IMR)
the rate of deaths of infants between birth and their first birthday. Usually expressed per 1000 live births.
HSI - under 5 mortality rate (U5MR)
the number of deaths of children under five years of age per 1000 live births.
HSI - morbidity rate
refers to ill-health in an individual and the levels of ill-health in a population or group
HSI - incidence
the number or rate of new cases of a particular condition during a specific time (often 12 months)
HSI - prevalence
the (total) number or proportion of cases of a particular disease or condition present in a population at a given time
