What is health and wellbeing?
Health and wellbeing refers to the overall state of a person’s physical, social, emotional, mental and spiritual being and is characterized by a balance in which the individual feels happy, healthy, capable and engaged.
Physical Health and Wellbeing
Physical health relates to the functioning of the body and it’s systems. It includes the physical capacity to perform daily activities or tasks.
Characteristics:
* Appropriate levels of fitness
* Healthy body weight
Mental Health and Wellbeing
Mental health relates to the mind or brain and it relates to the ability to think and process information. A mentally healthy brain enables an individual to positively form opinions, make decisions and use logic.
Characteristics:
* Low levels of stress and anxiety
* Positive thought patterns
Social Health and Wellbeing
Social health relates to the ability to form meaningful and satisfying relationships with others and the ability to manage or adapt appropriately to different social situations.
Characteristics:
* Supportive network of friends
* Supportive and well-functioning family
Spiritual Health and Wellbeing
Spiritual health is not material in nature, but relates to ideas, beliefs, values and ethics.
Characteristics:
* Peace and harmony
* Positive meaning and purpose in life
Emotional Health and Wellbeing
Emotional health is about the positive management and expressions of emotional actions and reactions as well as the ability to display resilience.
Characteristics:
* Have a high level of resilience
* Expressing appropriate emotions in different situations
