Health And The Sustainable Development Goals Flashcards
Sustainable development goals?
A set of 17 goals set by the United Nations for the H+WB of ALL PEOPLE, and the PROTECTION of the planet, intended to be achieved by 2030.
identify the goals
1 = no poverty
2 = zero hunger
3 = good health and well-being
4 = quality education
5= gender equality
6= clean water and sanitation
13= climate action
sustainable development
development that meets the needs of the present without compromising with the ability of the future generations to meet their own needs
global health
worldwide
rationale
why something exists
‘bc’
rationale of the SDGS
- b/c new goals were needed when Millennium development goals ended in 2015, MDGS made good progress in poverty, edu., health, hunger, and environment so needed something to continue making progress in these areas
- b/c there were uneven progress across regions and countries e.g. ind. ppls. those who are most disadvantaged e.g. due to poverty, sex etc were left behind. hence still lots of work that needed to be done to close the gap and achieve prosperity for all
- b/c new global challenges had emerged, e.g. env. changed (climate change), increase conflict, mass migration, ultimately these challenges had potential to ‘un-do’ the work.
key features of SDG3
reerha
to…
- reduce global maternal mortality rates (MMR)
- end preventable deaths of newborns and children under 5
- end epidemics of communicable diseases (e.g. AIDS, Malaria, water-borne diseases)
- reduce mortality from non-comm. diseases, and promote mental H+WB
- halve global deaths and injuries from road traffic accidents
- achieve universal health coverage (including access to sexual and reproductive health-care services)
objectives
- what they aim to achieve ‘to’
- to end extreme poverty: essential for SDG3. –> struggle to afford = preventable deaths.
- to fight inequality and injustices: for ALL
- to address climate change: SDG 13
why is SDG 3 important?
- bc millions of ppl die globally from mainly preventable causes: comm and non comm
- bc MMR are high in many developing countries (often due to reduced access to adequate antenatal healthcare)
- bc infant and child mortality rates are high in many developing countries –> many could be prevented w/ improved access to safe water etc
- bc mental health conditions, road trauma and harmful substance use contribute significantly to the global BOD, especially in young ppl
how could the key features if SDG 3 be addressed
REERHA
R: increase access to contraception (condoms), family planning, edu, skilled birth attendants
E: vaccinations e.g. measles/whooping cough, access to clean water
E: increase access to HC e.g. antibiotics
R: education, food security
H: laws, safe cars, road quality, edu
A: increase access to contraception’s, treatments, skilled birth attendants
why is SDG1 important
reasons
- bc over 800 million ppl still live in extreme poverty
- bc 1/4 children under 5 has inadequate height for their age e.g. stunted growth
- bc 1/5 ppl live on less than $1.25 per day = poor standard of living and increase risk of poor health
SDG 1 features
- eradicate extreme poverty (those living on less than 1.90 daily)
- implement social protection systems e.g. welfare payments, unemployment benefits
social protection systems
measures put in place to prevent inds. and families from suffering due to poverty.
- e.g. subsidised dr app. vaccinations
- gov. subsidized HC
- welfare payments e.g. ppl who are old/disabled
- access to social housing
- income security through unemployment benefits
food security
when all ppl can obtain nutritionally adequate, cult. app., safe food regularly thru non-emergency sources. “constant access”
hunger
the continuing lack of food needed for an active and healthy life
