Health and safety at work act 1947
A
- Ensures employee’s health, safety, and welfare at work
- Protects non-employee against the health and safety risks ariing from work activities
- Sets out responibilities that: employers have to their employees and the public, employees have to themselves and each other

Risk assesments
A
- Identify hazards and minimise risks
- Often a wide range of health and safety considerations
- Many have similar health and safety hazards as construction/building sites

A
- Archaeologists watch for archaeological finds/features during development or construction
- Aim: to ensure the recording, and where possible the excavation and preservation of, archaeological remains

- Heavy machinery
- Hard hats

- Overhead hazards

Minimising risk
A
- Keep work areas tidy
- Position soil heaps at a distance form the excavation area
- Trenches should be stepped up or shored up
- For every 1m down, step back 1m
- Should recieve training in the use of all tools and equipment a part of occupational health
- Understand safe and correct usage of larger tools
- Knowledge of appropriate loading for buckets and wheelbarrows
- Shouldn’t be asked to carry more than 25k

PPE: Personal Protective Equipment
A
- Hard hats
- Gloves
- Kneepads, kneeling pads
- Waterproof, tough clothing
- Steel toe capped footwear
- Hi-Viz vests

Laboratories
A
- Employers are responsible for creating and maintaining laboratory protocols and safe systems of work
- Employee’s responsibility to ensure that the adhere to the guidelines + regulations
- Swappning hazardous chemicals for less hazardous/non-toxic ones
- Don’t eat or drink in labs
- PPE requirements vary, but labcoats and gloves are standard
- If working with chemicals then safety glasses, gloves/gauntlets
- Hazardous chemicals/bio material: visor, respirator, hazmat suit
