What are the individual responsibilities in surveying safely?

A

Individuals employed by RICS-regulated firms have a direct responsibility to ensure corporate health and safety policies and procedures are practised effectively and competently.

It is therefore essential that individuals have the necessary skills, knowledge, training and experience to carry out these tasks.

What is the hierarchy of risk control?

A

Elimination – redesign the activity so the hazard is removed

Substitution – Replace materials with a less hazardous one

Engineering controls – use work equipment to prevent falls where you cant avoid working at height

Administrative controls – Identifying and implementing the procedures needed to work e.g. reduce lone working / work in daylight

A

A construction site induction is a safety briefing given to workers at the start of the project. It tells them about the safety rules and controls in place, the hazards they might be exposed to, and how to work safely on the site

What is the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974?

A

Duties on employers and employees – responsibility on both parties.
Employers must ensure as far as ‘reasonably practical’ the health and safety and welfare at work of all employees

The Act aims to:
* secure the health, safety and welfare of people at work
* protect others against risks to health and safety arising from work activities
* control dangerous substances
* control certain emissions into the atmosphere.

Employers with 5 or more employees must have written health and safety documents, detail the organisations health and safety structure.

Employees must follow the rules and act in a safe manner.

A
