Health and Safety Act 1974
What is understanding of Health and Safety 1974?
- It puts a duty to every employer to ensure health, Safety and welfare at work of all employees.
- It is policed by the HSE as a criminal offence – with fines and or imprisonment.
It acts as an Legal umbrella to enforce other health and safety legislation.

What is a risk assessment?
A legal requirement under the Health and Safety Act, for organisations employing more than 5 staff, to carry out documented health and safety risk assessment for all of their significant hazards.
What is the minimum requirement of a risk assessment?
- Identify the (Hazard)
- People at risk
- Evaluate risk and likelihood
- Advise on procedures how to minimise or eliminate risk.
What is a method statement?
A document that details the way a work task is to be completed safely.
Construction (Design and Management) CDM Regulations 2015
What is the purpose of the CDM 2015?
- To ensure H&S issues are properly considered during a project’s development.
- It applies to all buildings and construction work
Who are the main duty holders under CDM 2015?
The Client, Principal Designer and Principal Contractor
When is a Principal Designer required?
All projects with 1 or more contractor.
What are duties of a PD under CDM 2015?
- Plan, manage, monitor, and coordinate health and safety (pre-construction)
- Identify, eliminate or control foreseeable risks
- Provide relevant information to other duty holders
- Liaise with PC in the management and coordination of the construction phase.
What are the duties of the Client under CDM 2015?
- Appoint competent duty holders
- Allow sufficient times and recourses
- Provide relevant information to duty holders
- Ensure Principle Designers and Contractor carry out duties
- Ensure welfare facilities
