- What is the HSE?
The Health and Safety Executive. They are a nation independent watchdog for work related health, safety and illness. It acts in the public interest to reduce work related death and serious injury across Great Britain.
- Define what service the HSE provides to improve safety?
- The HSE is there to protect people’s health and safety by ensuring risks in a changing work place a properly controlled.
- The HSE helps businesses adapt to change in occupational health and safety law.
- How long should H & S data be kept for?
Technically forever (subject to the nature of it intended use), information such as asbestos exposure may be required to monitor long term illnesses such as asbestosis.
- What is a Construction Phase Health and Safety Plan (CPH&SP)
This is a plan of how the Contractor will carry out the works safely. The document belongs to the Contractor and should be updated throughout the project.
- What are the key principles of COSHH?
Control of Substances Hazardous to Health requires employers to prevent or reduce workers exposure to substances including:
* Chemicals
* Fumes, gases, vapours, mists (paint, glue, welding and cleaning agents)
* Dust (asbestos and silica)
* Biological agents and germs.
- What is corporate manslaughter?
An organisation is guilty of corporate manslaughter offense If the way in which its activities are managed or organised causes a person’s death and if this amounts to a gross breach of a relevant duty of care owed by the organisation to the deceased.
- What is the Considerate Contractors Scheme?
A non-for-profit independent organisation founded in 1997 to improve the image of the industry. It encourages contractors and their supply chain to implement best practice:
* Aims to promote construction
* Aims to deliver best practice in terms of site operation
* Voluntary effort
* Delivering standards and benefitting the local community
- What are the main assessment categories within the Considerate Contractors Scheme?
There are 5 codes of considerate practice:
1. Care about safety
2. Protect the environment
3. Care about appearance
4. Value the workforce
5. Respect the community
- What is leading cause of long-term health issues in the Construction Industry

When they first start on a new site
- When you last visited site what considerations did you give to your own health and safety?
- I made sure I was inducted for that site and reminded myself of the site-specific hazards of this project and reviewed my internal HASP.
- I made sure I was aware of the activities that were going on that day and any specific hazards they may pose.
- I ensure that my PPE was relevant for the site, and it was all in good order.
- Was vigilant on site and made sure I reported any potential incidents to the management or stopped work if needed.
- You are going to complete a site valuation in your own, what should you do before leaving the office?
* Carry out a lone working risk assessment and any other risk assessments that may be relent to the work.
* Speak with someone and tell them where you are going and when you expect to be back
* Agree a number of checks in times with that person to ensure you are safe
* Make the site manager aware of my visit and ensure my PPE is correct for the task.
