Health and fitness Flashcards
What is the definition of health?
A state of complete physical, mental and social well-being, and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity
What is the definition of fitness?
the ability to meet demands of the environment
What is ill-health?
being in a state of poor physical, mental or social well-being
What does WHO stand for?
World Health Organisation
What are the 10 components of fitness?
Agility, balance, cardio-vascular endurance, co-ordination, flexibility, muscle endurance, power, reaction time, strength, speed
Benefits of fitness testing?
Show starting level of fitness, motivation, vary your training programme, monitor improvement, compare to national averages, identify strengths/weaknesses, re-evaluate training needs
Limitations of fitness testing
might not be sport specific, uncompetitive nature, unreliable, performer may lack motivation, incorrect conditions
what is meant by validity?
is it measuring what it is set out to
what is meant by reliability?
a question of whether the test is accurate. It is important to ensure that all procedures are correctly maintained for all
What is meant by quantitative?
Actual values, readings compared to national averages
what is meant by qualitative?
Open- ended testing procedures and less structured
Cardiovascular endurance
The ability of the heart and lungs to supply oxygen to the working muscles
multi stage fitness test
Speed
The maximum rate at which an individual is able to perform a movement or cover a distance in a period of time, putting the body parts into action as quickly as possible. distance/time
30m sprint test
strength
the ability to overcome a resistance. This can be maximal (single rep lift), explosive (high jump), static (handstand) or dynamic (rowing )
handgrip dynamometer strength test
Power
the product of strength and speed
strength x speed
vertical jump test
flexibility
the range of movement possible at a joint
sit and reach test
co-ordination
the ability to use two or more different parts of the body together smoothly and efficiently
anderson catch test, wall toss test
Agility
The ability to move and change direction quickly while maintaining control
illinois agility test
reaction time
the time taken to initiate response to a stimulus the time taken from the presentation of the stimulus starting to initiate a response
ruler drop test
balance
the maintenance of the centre of mass over the base of support
stork balance test
muscular endurance
the ability of a muscle or muscle group to undergo repeated contractions avoiding fatigue
abdominal curl conditioning test
