functions of the skeleton Flashcards
what are the functions of the skeleton
(SPMSMB)
Support
protection
movement
structural shape and attachment
mineral storage
blood cell production
support
bones are solid and rigid. Keep us upright and hold the rest of the body - the muscles and organs- in place
protection
enclosing and protecting the body’s organs from external forces- brain and cranium lungs and ribs
movement
provides anchor points for muscles to pull against. The ling bones in the arms and legs work as levers to allow movement
structural shape and point for attachment
gives our general shape like height and build. Tall people have long leg bones and large vertebrae whereas bigger peoples have large clavicles and scapula and pelvises. Provides anchorage for muacles
mineral storage
bone stores several minerals such as calcium and phosphorus which is released in to blood when needwd
blood cell production
inner marrow of long bones and ribs produce red and white blood cells which are important for carry oxygen to muscles and fighting infection
